Description
Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters NHS Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site preserves the home of Henry W. Longfellow, one of the world’s foremost 19th century poets. The house also served as headquarters for General George Washington during the Siege of Boston, July 1775 - April 1776. In addition to its history, the site offers unique opportunities to explore 19 th and early 20 th century life, literature, and arts through its rich and varied collection of artifacts and archival materials, including 450+ linear feet of paper. These are the Longfellow family papers, including journals, letters, and photographs. The site has an ongoing effort to digitize these materials and make them accessible to the public online. Much of that work is done by volunteers in the virtual transcriber program.

The volunteer will be responsible for transcribing a set of papers in the archives, following standard procedures discussed in site-provided training. Typical time commitment is 2-10 hours/week, but this is very flexible. This can be done from any computer with a word processing program and an internet connection. Finished transcriptions are then sent back to the site and collected by the Archivist to be reviewed and eventually published.
